"This is Erichthonios. Apologies if I have missed your transmission. Should you feel inclined, pray leave a message, and I shall be sure to return word to you."
[ Difficult conversations needed to be had. Emet-Selch hadn't anticipated Lahabrea's son to be inquisitive enough to ask him what he had meant by discarding mortal flesh. In fairness, he could have skirted the truth as well. He didn't have to be brutally honest. But is keeping such a secret hidden to the boy's benefit? He doesn't know.
And that's why they're here, at this tavern, in one of the private rooms as promised. After the server delivers their drinks and food - if any - Emet-Selch waits for the door to shut and weaves a soundproof ward over the room. ]
[To the point. And eager as Erichthonios is for answers, he is as well.]
I wish to know what Hydaelyn is. And why it attacked us. You said... You said you, and my father, and Themis were the only ones to avoid its strike. Is...
[Is it so powerful? The dread inside him sinks deep, pulling his thoughts down, and down, like gazing into a yawning abyss.
[ He only takes small bites. Morsels easily and quickly swallowed before he has to answer. Erichthonios, he knows, will have many questions and if Emet-Selch doesn't eat when he can then he won't stop talking and his food will grow cold. ]
--Firstly, Hydaelyn is not some beast or creature. To explain I must start from the beginning.
[ That said, it's been...a long time. He hasn't had to frame such an explanation in one of his own's people's terms before - mortals have a different context of time - so he pauses to gather his thoughts before speaking. ]
...I suppose it was before the issue with Pandaemonium arose that this sorry saga begins. I was sent to Elpis to assess candidacy of a man called Hermes for the seat of Fandaniel. In the process I discovered, with the help of-- Azem's familiar, that Hermes had sent a flock of unregistered creations beyond the bounds of our star in search of other sentient beings some a century or so ago. And it just so happened that the result of that search was due to be transmitted back to his locus the very next day.
To summarise: there was no life to be found. Any being that yet lived promptly ended it when his creations asked of them their reason for being alive. Thus the flock settled at the very edge of creation, overcome by the despair of a myriad of stars, and sought to bring about the end of the only one remaining: Etheirys.
When we learnt this terrible truth, I initially tried to bring Hermes' creation in for questioning so that the Convocation could deliberate on its course. But Hermes stole it away and, after confrontation, wiped our memories - his own included - so that mankind could face its judgement fairly.
[ He waves his fork vaguely. ] Well, the star did nearly face its end. Hermes' creation would have destroyed it utterly had half our people not offered their lives in sacrifice to create a god capable of reinforcing the star's battered aetherial currents. We managed to hold our end...temporarily.
Another sacrifice was made to stir the elements anew and bring life back to the soil, air, and waters. It was at that point that a new conflict arose...from amongst our own people.
[ He pauses, staring morosely at his plate. ] Do you recall the previous Azem?
[Before the incident at Pandaemonium, yes. But not long. So recent is the chain of events that the tale readily sparks his memories. He murmurs, reflecting upon the story. Some parts do not yet make sense, but others...]
So the Chief Overseer's most cherished concept did not dissipate after all... and the accident at Ktisis Hyperboreia was no accident...
[Ere he can descend fully into his thoughts, he lifts his head. Emet-Selch has asked a question, and 'tis better that he answers it ere his mind wanders too far.]
I know of her, yes. Venat. But she did not come to Pandaemonium, so I've no personal connection to her. The current Azem's familiar, I have met. We've become good friends.
[ He sighs. The Warrior of Light must have lingered a little longer after escaping Hermes. At Venat's behest, perhaps? Or sheer coincidence? They wouldn't have been in much danger since their memories were erased. ]
Venat led the faction who argued against further sacrifice. She and her followers summoned Hydaelyn, a god to oppose Zodiark, who then sundered the star into ten and four parts. Only myself, Elidibus, and Lahabrea escaped unscathed. Everything and everyone else became pale reflections of their original selves.
I can agree that further sacrifice should be avoided if at all possible. Lives are precious. Our people, our creations, the life upon the star...
[This much he can agree on. But the rest... He feels a knot form in his throat, dread creeping through his veins. He does not like the sound of the rest.]
But what do you mean? They sundered the star... and rendered all upon it as pale reflections of ourselves? What exactly became of us?
You are aware, of course that all of creation is comprised of aether?
[ He sets down his eating utensils and gestures to illustrate his point. ]
Hydaelyn's unique ability is that She can...divide things upon the aetherial level. The result is a copy, its aether perfectly divided. She did this not only to all living things but the star itself, separating its copies - reflections - such that only an immense and devastating flood of aether can break down the barrier between them.
[Reflection though he is not, Erichthonios begins to grow pale as it dawns on him just what those words mean.]
...So it is alike to when Lahabrea tore his existence in two, and created Hephaistos...
[Two selves. Memories cleaved. Aether diffused, split between a body and a crystal, and then the body the aether from that crystal later inhabited.]
Themis said that his actions had bordered on insanity. That he might have rewritten his very existence, and that escaping with his life was a miracle. So, that is what became of us... not between two, but...
[His head dips, and the last word, he struggles to say.]
[Lifting his head, Erichthonios looks confused for a moment, then considers:]
Ah, that's right. It must have been long ago for you...
[He straightens, gathering his composure so that he might explain properly.]
When my father confronted Athena, his wife, for experimenting upon me, she offered him answers he craved -- why she did what she did, why she would not stop, and in turn he wished to know if she ever loved him. To attain these answers, he consented to bond their souls... and in so doing, he unwittingly exposed himself to her corruption. When she declared this to him, he tore his essence in two, seeking to isolate that corruption from himself... although he has since reabsorbed it to restore himself to his full power.
His corrupted half was... different. Outwardly passionate, manipulative, and cruel.
[ He had noticed something amiss but, at the time, he hadn't enquired too deeply. Lahabrea had just lost his wife after all. It would have been insensitive. So the old man had torn his soul apart without any hesitation? Well, it explained his behaviour after the Sundering as well. Emet-Selch had assumed it to be a product of his vessel hopping. It seems it WAS that and more. ]
Anyway - yes. Something akin to that I suppose. But...cleaner. Not tearing away specific parts of the soul but an even split.
But the overall effect... would be much the same, wouldn't it. Enervation of vigor, of physical and magical capacity. The soul itself...
It... must have been a terrible thing to witness. How are... all of you? You, my father, and Themis...
[Unlike most of their people, he actually has some idea of what trauma is like and how much it can distort a person's every day perceptions and existence. He expects the answer to be bad. He expects it to be very bad.]
Ah. 'Tis the creature that Master Emet-Selch saw, yes? I'm actually on my way to see it now.
Is there a preferred location for testing? I just passed by the MANTA board and saw it has a bounty placed on it. I do not think it shall remain safe where it is now. Mayhap I could ward a space off for observation?
I agree. I proposed to Emet-Selch that we move it to our crew's island, but its residents may attack the creation. We must needs find a safe space for it. Have you any in mind?
I've no space of my own save that which has been assigned to me from the start, but as a warder and one learning to become a Keyward, I am able to ward off a space to prevent entry or exit, should you be concerned about predation.
That would be the perfect solution! We should let Emet-Selch know. Though he says there is a hunter seeking the bounty on the creature's head... I can only hope he can persuade them not to kill it.
