And of course, at least part of the point must be for Erichthonios to learn to walk on his own rather than leaning on him, and that may only prolong the process. However, it is an offer that is always on the table when needed, and so he doesn't see the harm in bringing it up.
There are already enough ideas swirling around in his mind, mostly to do with his most immediate task at hand, but he begins to add more to the maelstrom, leading him to the most obvious conclusion.

It isn't that he thinks Erichthonios is too senseless to think of such a thing himself. He is simply yet again calling on past experiences and advice others found it necessary to hunt him down amidst piles of books and pages to share.
